About Us

  • Soul Reason is a fantastic small choir. I’ve made friends and have built confidence, and most of all enjoy every single rehearsal.
    Sarah Youd
There is every support available in the way of guide recordings too so home practice is easy. If you have been thinking of joining a choir, think no more and just do it!
    Patrick O'Donnell
  • I can't read music and struggle to remember lyrics but that's never been an issue under Maia's professional and patient guidance.
    Gaele Jenner
....she has created an ever expanding set list of funky soul and heartwarming songs that are so enjoyable and satisfying to sing. An additional treat is to perform with a live band....
    Dawn Sellick
  • It's given me so much joy and a much needed focus outside my work and family which has been great for my sanity! The music has been right up my street too....
    Allie Quinn
Coming back to singing is never easy but Maia and the group have been both accepting of a voice trying to find it's right "home" and forgiving when it's not necessarily successful.
    Phil Newton
  • It's such a joy to sing soulful songs each week with this lovely bunch. I also really appreciate the supportive, family atmosphere.
    Bronwen Davies
A fun, friendly and talented group who I really enjoy spending time with each week. Come and give us a go!

Our Mission
Our mission is to bring people together through the power of music, fostering a sense of community and joy. We believe in the transformative power of singing, not only for individual wellbeing but also for creating a collective spirit that resonates beyond our rehearsals and performances.

We don't hold auditions, but places are strictly limited to help ensure good balance between the voice parts. We offer available places ahead of the new season, every September.

What We Offer

Expert Musical Direction: Our choir is led by an experienced and dedicated Musical Director who is passionate about soul and groove music. As a professional vocal coach and singer, our MD is experienced in helping each member reach their full potential.
High-Quality Repertoire: We focus on contemporary repertoire with soul, funk and groove leanings. Although our repertoire is 'light', we enjoy getting our teeth into complex harmonies and rhythms that challenge and inspire our singers.
Regular Performances: We pride ourselves on delivering high-quality performances at various events and venues, with our very own 4-piece band of professional musicians. Our goal is to share the joy of soul music with a wider audience and to showcase the hard work and talent of our choir members.

We welcome singers of all backgrounds and musical experience, and expect a commitment to the following:

Vocal Ability: Prospective members should have a confident singing voice and the ability to hold their part within a group. You will never be put on the spot or asked to sing alone, although there are plenty of solo opportunities for those who want them!
Commitment: We rehearse once a week, and perform at least once per term*, with our main concert happening at the end of Term 3. As such, members are asked to commit to the full season when they sign up.
Preparation: Members are expected to practice their parts outside of rehearsals to ensure we maintain a high standard during our sessions. A full selection of resources is made available to all members.

Our choir is more than just a singing group; it's a community where every voice matters. We look forward to singing with you soon!

*Members do not have to attend every scheduled performance.
Maia Hendrickx - Musical Director
Since graduating from East15 Acting School, Maia has worked professionally as a soloist, session singer and vocal coach.
Whilst specialising in Musical Theatre, Maia enjoys working in a number of different genres. Among her current musical projects, she is one half of Americana/Folk Duo ‘HendrickxRoy’ and also a regular guest vocalist for ‘The Clive Fortune Big Band’.
Alongside performing, Maia runs a busy studio in West Berkshire, where she trains aspiring young musical theatre performers.

After completing her PGCert in Vocal Pedagogy, Maia was invited to speak at the 2019 ‘Voice Geek Conference’ to share the innovative findings of her research on ‘Depression and Its Impact Upon the Working Practices of the Professional Singer’ to an international audience of her peers.

In 2020, Maia accidentally started a choir, online, in the middle of a pandemic. Since then, she has loved working with the singers that make up ‘Soul Reason’, who bring her joy every Thursday.
